Irrigation and Drainage System Rehabilitation Project in Southwest Phnom Penh Reaches 55% Completion

The ongoing project to rehabilitate and enhance the irrigation and drainage system in southwest Phnom Penh has achieved a significant milestone, with approximately 55% of the work completed. This ambitious initiative, funded by Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to improve water management in the region and is making steady progress toward its completion.

During a recent inspection visit, led by HE Pich Veasna, Undersecretary of State and Project Manager, stakeholders evaluated the project’s advancements. The inspection highlighted the project’s critical significance to the provinces of Kampong Speu, Kandal, and Takeo.

HE Pich Veasna expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, urging the construction team to maintain strict adherence to quality standards and work safety protocols. He emphasized the importance of adhering to technical standards to ensure the project’s objectives are met by the planned deadline.

The comprehensive rehabilitation project, estimated to take 36 months, is slated for completion in June 2026. It is structured into two key sub-projects: the Rolang Chrey sub-project, which encompasses Chbar Mon City and Samrong Tong District in Kampong Speu Province, and the Kandal Stung-Bati sub-project, which spans Kandal Stung District in Kandal Province and Bati District in Takeo Province.

With a commitment to enhancing the local irrigation and drainage infrastructure, this project is expected to significantly benefit the agricultural sector and improve the overall quality of life for residents in southwest Phnom Penh. As the project progresses, ongoing assessments will ensure that it continues to meet its goals and delivers lasting solutions for water management in the region.
