Japan Grants Over USD 40 Million for Expansion of Phum Prek Water Treatment Plant in Cambodia

The Japanese government has committed over USD 40 million to enhance the capacity of the Phum Prek water treatment plant, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at supporting the growing water demands of Phnom Penh. This investment will increase the plant’s capacity from 150,000 cubic meters to 195,000 cubic meters per day, aligning with the Phnom Penh Water Supply Master Plan.

The official signing ceremony took place on September 30, 2025, attended by prominent figures, including Mr. Ek Sonchan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority, and Mr. Long Naro, General Director of the authority. Representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) were also present, marking a significant step forward in enhancing Cambodia’s water supply capabilities.

Mr. Long Naro emphasized the urgency of the expansion, noting the pressing increase in water demand in the capital. “The Phum Prek plant’s expansion by 45,000 cubic meters per day will ensure that we can meet the needs of Phnom Penh residents,” he stated. Currently, the plant has the capacity to produce over 1 million cubic meters of clean water per day, exceeding the present demand, which ranges between 850,000 and 870,000 cubic meters.

With construction set to commence immediately, the project is expected to take 36 months, aiming for completion by the end of 2028. Once finished, the upgraded facility will play a vital role in securing a reliable water supply for the city’s population amid rapid urban growth.

This investment is part of Japan’s broader commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives in Cambodia, showcasing the strong partnership between the two nations. As Phnom Penh continues to grow, projects like the expansion of the Phum Prek water treatment plant are essential for ensuring that the city can meet the needs of its residents now and in the future.
