Japan Commits US$50m to Expand Phnom Penh’s Electricity Infrastructure

The Japanese government has committed to lending 8 billion yen (US$50 million) to expand Phnom Penh’s electricity grid. This announcement came following the visit of Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Kami Kawayoko, to Cambodia from 5 to 6 July 2024.

During her visit, Mrs. Kami Kawayoko met with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, and Samdech Hun Manet, Prime Minister. Additionally, she held discussions with His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea, where both parties agreed to enhance cooperation between the Cambodian Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force.

The Japanese government also promised to provide patrol vessels to the Cambodian National Police. Furthermore, Mrs. Kami Kawayoko pledged to encourage more Japanese investors to invest in Cambodia, confirming that Japan will provide approximately 8 billion yen to finance the expansion of Phnom Penh’s electricity network.

In addition, HE Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea and Mrs. Kami Kawayoko signed an exchange of letters and related documents concerning a grant of approximately US$2.7 million for the Human Resource Development Scholarship Project. They also signed agreements for concessional loans totaling US$59.6 million to support the National Road 5 Rehabilitation Project (Thla Mam – Battambang and Serei Sophorn – Poipet) (III).
