Japan Grants USD 7.2 Million to Cambodia for Social & Economic Development

The Japanese government has extended a grant of 1,002 million yen, equivalent to USD 7.2 million, to support a range of social and economic development initiatives.

The funding was formalized through the signing of the Exchange of Letters and related documents by HE Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Cambodia, on 26 December 2024.

This latest grant underscores Japan’s long-standing commitment to enhancing Cambodia’s infrastructure and cultural preservation. Alongside this funding, Japan has announced an additional grant of USD 900,000 dedicated to the Bayon Temple Preservation and Restoration Project. This three-year initiative, set to run from 2025 to 2028, aims to safeguard one of Cambodia’s most iconic historical landmarks, ensuring its legacy for future generations. (Read more)

Furthering its support, Japan has recently provided substantial concessional loans to expand Phnom Penh’s transmission and distribution system. The third loan package, valued at over USD 54 million, is earmarked for the construction of substations and transmission lines, particularly in the Chbar Ampov area. These projects are poised to enhance Cambodia’s energy infrastructure, addressing growing demand and fostering sustainable urban development. (Read more)
