Koh Kong is home to more than 1 million hectares of natural protected land

Being renowned as one of the greenest provinces, Koh Rong province is home to the ‘Kesnor’ birds, is rich in all kinds of natural wealth, has a wide range of mountains on one side and a deep-sea on the other side, plus many potential development opportunities for the economy, energy, underground and underwater mining resources, a deep water port and international airport. However, what makes Koh Kong truly different is the 10 natural protected areas on a total area of ​​over one million hectares.

The figure was provided to the public by Koh Kong Provincial Governor H.E Mithona Phouthong, in a press conference organized by a government spokesman at the Council of Ministers on11 June.

The 10 protected areas include the South Cardamom National Park, the Central Cardamom Mountains, the Central Wildlife Sanctuary, the Taipei Lake, Biodiversity Conservation, the Protected Areas System (in range of the Cardamom Mountains), the Koh Rong National Park, the Botumok National Park for Multipurpose Use, Wildlife Sanctuary, PeamKrasoub area, Ramsar area, KohKapi, and Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary.

“These protected areas offer tremendous benefits for the livelihoods of local communities, as a sanctuary for animals and humans, attracting national and international tourists, and especially these natural resources,” the governor said.

“It plays a vital role in the development of the country through the ecotourism service and maintaining the local natural environment, especially mangroves and rainforests in the southern Cardamom Mountains,” she added.

It should be recalled that last April, the Ministry of Environment registered state land in the protected area of ​​PeamKratsoub Wildlife Sanctuary covering a total area of 4,672,61 hectares. The Ministry is currently studying the possibility of registering the island of Koh Kong Krao, the largest island in the country, by the year 2021.
