Location Determined for Airport Development Project in Mondulkiri

The Secretary of State for Civil Aviation has said that the administration of Mondulkiri province has designated some 300 hectares of land for the construction of an airport in the northeastern province.

Sin Chansereyvutha, spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said that authorities are now approaching the boundaries of the airport after setting the location of the new airport.

According to a spokesman, the location of the airport is in O’ Reang district of Mondulkiri province.

“After the administration of Mondulkiri province handed over land to build the airport two weeks ago, fencing the boundaries around airport has been made, but there is no construction,” he said.

The government recently announced a plan to study airport construction projects in northeastern provinces including Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri provinces and the airport is to facilitate tourist travel and to turn the northeastern province into a main hub in the country.

The feasibility study in Mondulkiri province was announced in April and it is in the framework of the development of new tourism products for northeastern provinces. As planned, the airport will be used only for domestic travel.

According to Mr Chansereyvutha, the new airport will have an 1800-metre runway.

“It is a government project, the budget for construction will go to the state budget, while the construction date is yet to be determined, and from now on, it will take about five years if the construction about to happen,” he said.
