Ministry Proposes Asbestos Regulation to Protect Public Health in Cambodia

At a consultation workshop on 27 January 2025, HE Say Sam Al, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction, announced a pivotal step towards regulating the use of asbestos in Cambodia’s construction sector. The proposed policy framework aims to mitigate public health risks while supporting the construction industry’s interests.

“Asbestos has been a staple in construction materials like roofing, insulation, and flooring in Cambodia for years,” Minister Sam Al explained. “However, many consumers remain unaware of the serious health hazards it poses, especially when disturbed. The fibres released can lead to severe respiratory issues, including lung cancer.”

The workshop emphasised the need to raise public awareness and gather stakeholder insights on whether to restrict or ban asbestos use. This move highlights the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding Cambodian citizens while considering industry standards.

Minister Sam Al emphasised, “This is the time for us to start a new chapter for the construction sector and decide its future course.”

Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions to ensure informed decisions that prioritise public health and align with global safety standards.
