Over 25 pedestrian bridges planned for Phnom Penh

To facilitate for safe passages of commuters and traffic flow along the roads due to the city’s increasing population, over 25 pedestrian bridges have been planned for construction in Phnom Penh in the near future.

SaingPiseth, Director of Phnom Penh’s Public Works and Transport, told Construction &Property Magazine on 15 June that the bridges will be built based on the priority condition.

“There are 27 pedestrian bridge projects and currently two under construction and other 25 pedestrian bridges will be built after,” Piseth said.

The locations for the 25 pedestrian bridges have been finally selected and are waiting for construction, added Piseth, who said the announcement of the locations will be made by H.E. KhongSreng, Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality.

During an inspection visit on 15 June to the under-construction DoeurmKor market pedestrian bridge, which is currently 95% complete, H.E. KhoungSreng, said more pedestrian bridges are in response to the rapid development of Phnom Penh, which currently has a population of 3 million, and to facilitate safe passage and reduce traffic accidents and traffic jams.

“Having seen the growth of vehicles and population, the Phnom Penh administration has increased development of infrastructures –building roads, drainage system, overpass, underpass, and pedestrian bridges to ease traffic jams,” he said.

Currently, there are five pedestrian bridges, two of which are located in front of Champu Von school, another located atNeangKonghing intersection, and the other two pedestrian bridges, located in front of the Doeurm Kor market and Sonthormok intersection, are currently under construction.
