Work on expanding National Road No. 3 to a 4-lane highway to ease access to Kampot province will start construction this April thanks to a USD215 million concessional loan from China.

The project is divided into two parts, Chom Chao-Bek Koos junction and Bek Koos junction-Kampot. From Chom Chao to Bek Koos junction, the road will be expanded to dual carriageway of a total width of 24.5 metres, while Bek Koos junction to Kampot, the road will remain two lanes, but will be expanded to a width of 12 metres.

The planned expansion will double the present width of the national road which is currently only around 9-11 metres. With a construction period of around 40 months, the project will be completed by 2021.

“Kampot province is salt supplier for the whole country of Cambodia. Kampot is also the land which is rich in resources for cement factories. Therefore, the improvement of the road connecting Phnom Penh to Kampot is a compulsory task to do,” said Prime Ministry Hun Sen at the opening ceremony of the Chip Mong Insee Cement Plant in Kampot Province on February 8.

“After the expansion, the logistic systems of those products will see a big improvement which is good for the whole economy,” he added.
