New Road Maintenance Technology Called Cold in Placed Recycling Introduced to Cambodia

A new road maintenance technology called cold in placed recycling has been introduced to Cambodia through a one-day seminar held at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) on 01 August.

As Cambodia is campaigning to improve its road quality through various projects, this new technology would see better road performance and could save money for Cambodia.

Speaking on the sidelines of the seminar that was co-organised by machinery firm Wirtgen Group, Asia’s equipment specialist Multico, and MPWT, professor Kim Jenkins from the University of Stellenbosch who was a speaker for the seminar, explained how Cambodia can adopt the technology to improve its road conditions.

According to Professor Kim, Cold In-Place Recycling technology is the reuse of the existing road pavement material and improving its quality to achieve better performance.

“The recycling means that you don’t remove the material in the road, you treat it in the road, and you improve it and compact it,” he said.

“Before we even do the recycling on the road, we take a sample of the material from the road to see the optimal performance of the material, which we call a mix design. Once we have the mix design then we use that information to go to the road,” he explained.
