New road maintenance technology called In-Place Recycling introduced to Cambodia

A new road maintenance technology called In-Place Recycling has been introduced to Cambodia through a one-day seminar held at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) on 01 August.

As Cambodia is campaigning to improve its road quality through various projects, this new technology would see better road performance and could save money for Cambodia.

Speaking on the sidelines of the seminar that was co-organised by machinery firm Wirtgen Group, Asia’s equipment specialist Multico, and MPWT, professor Kim Jenkins from the University of Stellenbosch who was a speaker for the seminar, explained how Cambodia can adopt the technology to improve its road conditions.

According to Professor Kim, Cold In-Place Recycling technology is the reuse of the existing road pavement material and improving its quality to achieve better performance.

“The recycling means that you don’t remove the material in the road, you treat it in the road, and you improve it and compact it,” he said.

“Before we even do the recycling in the road, we take a sample of the material from the road to see the optimal performance of the material, which we call a mix design. Once we have the mix design then we use that information to go to the road,” he explained.

“Then the other resource we need is the recycling machine, roller, bitumen tanker, and water supply, so you have a whole chain of different equipment that does the recycling of the road,” professor Kim added.

Given that the technology has been adopted elsewhere across the global on different levels, according to professor Kim, the technology is time saving and can save up to 35% in costs.

“One thing that the material [through the technology] does is make the material more durable and Cambodia has hard rainfall, so moisture damage is an important consideration in Cambodia, so this is one way to improve the quality of material,” he said.

H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of the MPWT welcomed the new technology while urging the participants to learn how this technology can be adopted in Cambodia.

“Today I am happy that we have the seminar where there are participants to learn how to maintain our roads, and if we look at this technology, it is more efficient, uses less time, is fast repairing, and at an affordable price,” H.E Sun Chanthol said.
