Preah Sihanouk Province Restores 27km of Canals to Reduce Floods

The Sihanoukville Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport has developed and rehabilitated 27km of canals in the province to avoid flooding caused by the rainy season to make the province more beautiful and environmentally friendly.

Mr Borey Vongsanith, Director of the Sihanoukville Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, said that in recent years, Sihanoukville has been flooded during heavy rains due to a sharp increase in investment which has caused a lot of garbage congestion in some sewer systems in the province, which made difficulties for people to live and make a living, the Radio National of Cambodia reported on 24 May.

He said that the authorities have started to restore five canals with a total length of 27 km to avoid floods in the province.

As a result, he said, last year there was a lot of rain, but the flooding was gone in just a short period of time, and when the rain stops, the water flows out quickly.

“Until now, there are no cases of heavy flooding like a few years ago because we have already developed,” he said.
