Sabesp Transforms Water Infrastructure Through Digital Twin Technology

Sabesp, one of the world’s largest water and waste management companies, is revolutionizing how it serves 30 million residents in São Paulo, Brazil, by shifting from reactive, manual processes to a proactive, data-driven framework called INTEGRA 4.0.

To achieve universal water and sanitation access, the utility partnered with Bentley Systems to break down data silos that previously hindered operational efficiency. By leveraging Bentley’s OpenFlows Water, OpenFlows Sewer, and WaterSight software, Sabesp created comprehensive digital twins—virtual replicas of its physical water and wastewater networks—that integrate geographic, commercial, and field data into a single, cloud-based “source of truth.”

Bentley’s OpenFlows Water enables Sabesp to visualize and manage a highly accurate digital replica of its physical water network.

This digital transformation provides engineers and operators with real-time visibility and advanced hydraulic modeling capabilities. In the heavily populated Jardins area, Sabesp combined OpenFlows Sewer and WaterSight with live sensor data and weather forecasts to anticipate potential system failures before they occur.

This shift toward proactive management has yielded dramatic results, including a 30% reduction in corrective services and sewage overflows, and the prevention of significant environmental pollution in the Tietê River.

To improve the Parque Novo Mundo wastewater system, Sabesp mapped hundreds of kilometers of complex underground linear assets into a single digital environment.

Beyond wastewater management, the software has optimized water supply distribution by identifying pressure anomalies and equipment failures. In the Vicente de Carvalho district, these insights led to a 29% reduction in water losses and stabilized supply for 150,000 residents.

By simulating future scenarios, like a heavy rain event, Sabesp engineers can identify system vulnerabilities and prevent sewage overflows.

The financial and operational benefits are equally substantial: the use of Bentley’s hydraulic modeling slashed diagnostic time by thousands of hours and saved millions of Brazilian Reais in unnecessary maintenance and customer claims. By modernizing its workflows and gaining a precise digital view of its infrastructure, Sabesp is successfully securing more reliable, sustainable water services for its communities.

Sabesp used Bentley’s OpenFlows Water to simulate and validate proposed operational scenarios, ensuring a reliable water supply for 150,000 residents in the Vicente de Carvalho district.
