Sihanoukville International Airport runway extension completed in mid-2020

Construction of the runway extension at Sihanoukville International Airport from 2,500 metres to 3,300 metres is expected to be completed on time around mid-2020 to cater for consecutive increases in passenger traffic at the facility.

Khek Norinda, Director of Communication and Public Relations at Cambodia Airports which manages three international airports in Cambodia, said that the runway extension is to allow the airport to handle bigger and longer-range aircrafts.

At the moment, work on VIP terminal and temporary terminal have been started, he said.

Work on the runway extension was started earlier in 2019 as part of the overall revamp of the airport facilities with a total investment of US$21 million. The project also includes building a new terminal in response to the increasing passenger traffic at the airport.

Figures from Cambodia Airport’s annual report show that Sihanoukville International Airport welcomed more than 1.6 million passengers in 2019, a 158% year-on-year rise compared to 2018.
