Singapore’s Changi airport to suspend operations on Terminal 4 from 16 May

Singapore’s Changi airport will suspend operations for the second time from 16 May at Terminal 4 following the suspension of operations at Terminal 2 at the beginning of May.

According to a Changi Airport press release on 12 May, Terminal 4 operations will be temporarily suspended from 16 May 2020 due to a sharp decline in flight movements because of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

All flights that used to land at Terminal 4 will be relocated to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Cathay Pacific and Korean Air have to be relocated to Terminal 1, while suspended terminals for other airlines will be announced when they next operate flights at Changi. The timeframe for the resumption of terminal operations it is still unclear, but Changi Airport Group (CAG) have said it will depend on the growing demand for air travel and the need for flights from international airlines to Changi.

While announcing the suspension of operations at the terminals, Singapore has taken advantage of the suspension to improve and expand the airport.

“The future of COVID-19 remains uncertain, but we remain optimistic about the recovery of aviation between Changi Airport and our partners,” Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Khaw Boo Wan posted on his personal Facebook account.

Earlier this month, Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 confirmed the suspension of operations from 01 May for 18 months to accelerate the construction process by one year, which was scheduled for completion in 2024. Changi Airport initially suspended operations at Terminal 2 on 01 April 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19.

In April, Changi Airport saw about 25,200 passengers and 3,870 flights and 96,500 tons of cargo.

So far, Singapore has identified an additional 884 new cases of the virus, bringing the total to 20,541. Of these, 1,093 are still being hospitalized according to data on the Government of Singapore website on 11 May 2020.

Last month, Singapore became Asia’s most infected nation after China and India and has converted the Changi Exhibition Centre into a community isolation facility to treat COVID-19 patients. (Read more)
