Sixth Japanese-Funded Automatic Screen Pit Installed in Phnom Penh Drainage System

The sixth Japanese-funded automatic garbage collection machine in the drainage system (automatic screen pit) in Phnom Penh has been installed and was officially put into operation on Wednesday 4 August.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy Mr Toshikazu Tokioka, JICA Representative Ms Aya Tokumoto, and Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh Sam Piseth.

This automatic garbage collection machine is located in front of the Wat Phnom Pumping Station or known as the garden in front of the CDC.

According to JICA, before the usage of this automated machine, the drainage system was clogged with trash, and workers had to dive into the pit to remove the trash from the drainage water gate.

However, with this new mechanical machine, the garbage is automatically removed and transferred out.

This machine is part of the Phnom Penh Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement Project Phase 4 worth over US$36 million, which is an aid grant from the Government of Japan. (Read more)

Almost 100% complete, the project includes installation of sewers, the construction of an underground 65,000 cubic metre water reservoir, and the construction of a new pumping station with the capacity to drain up to1.4 cubic metres of water per second.

After going operational, the system will be able to stop the flooding in the area of Wat Phnom Penh and surrounding areas including Street 47, Street 90 and Street 92.
