SSCA: Koh Kong Airport Construction Timeframe Uncertain

The State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCC) has cast doubt on the completion timeframes for the new Dara Sakor International Airport and the restoration of Koh Kong Airport.

SSCC’s secretary of state Chea Aun said on Friday 20 April 2019 that the development of the Dara Sakor International Airport construction is currently in the stage of preparation.

Asked if the construction would end in 2020, Mr Aun said, “The timeframe has still not been set because it is in the stage of preparing the infrastructure and master plan.”

Located in Botom Sakor district, Koh Kong province, Dara Sakor International Airport is a key part of the development investment by China’s Union Development Group which was granted a land concession from the Cambodian government in 2008.

The company plans to inject US$200 million to build a 60m-wide, 3,200-metre runway and a new terminal.

Based on information from the company, once completed, the airport will be able to handle airplanes with the capacity of the Boeing 777 and Airbus A360.

Mr Aun explained that progress is slow on the restoration and redevelopment of the former Koh Kong Airport in Khemerak Phumin. “Koh Kong Airport, which is for domestic aviation, awaits high demand of travel.”

Samdech Hun Sen, prime minister of Cambodia, in his speech delivered at the Sea Festival in December 2018 in Koh Kong province, said that the airports will help Koh Kong province to become one of the attractive tourism hubs in the country.
