Thailand Transforming 72 Prisons Nationwide into Tourist Destinations

Thailand is transforming 72 prisons, or almost half of the total number of prisons nationwide into tourist attractions, reported the Chiangrai Times in late August.

Those designated prisons will accommodate tourists with a wide range of activities such as cooking competitions, handicraft shops made by inmates, and others to help unleash the inmates’ potential.

The Thai government believes the project will provide various skills to help inmates find jobs and live a normal life after prison.

According to the Minister of Justice, the project has thus far been implemented in five prisons in Trat, Rayong, Ratchaburi, and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces. The government will further transform another 67 prisons. The project will cover 72 prisons or equal to 50% of the total number of prisons in the country.

The minister said the project could not be implemented in all the prisons in the country due to limited resources.

However, if the project gains popularity, the Ministry of Justice will collaborate with the Ministry of Tourism to promote the kingdom’s tourism industry, he added.
