Gov’t Unveils Kampot Kep Salt Community Flourishing with Over 4,000 Hectares

In a resolute step towards fostering sustainable production, diversification, and conservation, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MISTI) has unveiled a visionary blueprint through Prakas No. 195 MISTI / 2023, dated 16 August 2023. This landmark legislation is poised to breathe new life into the salt production landscape of Kampot and Kep, orchestrating the establishment of a robust salt community, encompassing over 4,000 hectares.

Envisioned as a collaborative endeavour, this initiative sets the stage for a cohesive and dynamic partnership. Underpinning this visionary journey is the creation of the Kampot Salt Community Coordinating Committee, a strategic alliance spearheaded by MISTI. This committee will be reinforced by the collective expertise of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Commerce, and Administration of Kampot Province, culminating in a harmonious symphony of governance.

The charter bestowed upon the commission carries a profound mandate, woven intricately with the fabric of progress. Their multifaceted responsibilities encompass:

  1. Streamlining the establishment and seamless management of the salt community, fostering independent, transparent, efficient, and accountable functioning.
  2. Offering invaluable technical and legal support, propelling the community towards self-sufficiency while nurturing its growth.
  3. Intervening effectively, introducing measures to mitigate challenges and propel the community’s resilience.
  4. Underpinning this transformative journey is the collective endeavor to source aid and support for the burgeoning community, resonating with the spirit of collaborative progress.

A cornerstone requirement for the establishment and registration of a salt community is the embodiment of Cambodian nationality by a minimum of 50 members aged 18 years and above. This cohesive community shall be an embodiment of the geographical region within the specific administrative capital of Cambodia, engrossed in the occupation that underpins its identity – be it production systems, trade, industry, or services intricately interwoven with salt.

According to the report from the MISTI, as of now, the total area of rice fields in Kampot and Kep provinces is about 4,721.14 hectares.
