Gov’t Plants 4,500 Palm Trees Along Cambodia-Vietnam Border to Promote ‘Annual 9 July Planting Day’

Kampot provincial authorities have planted 4,500 palm trees along a 3-kilometre stretch of the Cambodia-Vietnam border road in Koh Veng, Koh Chamkar village, Boeung Sala Khang Tbong commune, Kampong Trach district. This initiative took place on 21 July 2024 to celebrate the “Planting Day”, held annually on 9 July to enhance historical significance and promote environmental consciousness.

Addressing over 600 participants, HE Mao Thunin, Governor of Kampot Province, emphasised that the planting of palm trees along the border road is intended to create a lasting historical legacy and inspire future generations to value forests and palm trees. He highlighted the cultural importance of palm trees, noting, “Palm trees provide special benefits and are also the Khmer national identity.”

HE Mao Thunin also urged the Kamport Department of Agriculture and Forestry Kampot to collaborate with local authorities and residents to annually continue planting and maintaining palm seedlings along border roads.

According to the Kampot Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, this is the third such planting in Kampong Trach district. The first planting occurred in 2022 with five palm trees, followed by 7,500 palm trees in 2023. In addition to the 4,500 palm trees planted this year, 1,000 rosewood seedlings of Neang Nuon, Chheuteal, and Koki were distributed to government units, schools, pagodas, and residents.
