The importance of fire safety certificates

As more and more buildings, both small and large, have mushroomed across Cambodia, having a sophisticated fire safety system is very important to minimise risk for all parties. Last year, the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the National Quality Inspection Centre for Fire Equipment (NICE), published the Fire Safety System-Building Design Code to promote fire safety for buildings in Cambodia.

Mr Bernard Mak, Director of Firemax Engineering Co., Ltd, a fire safety specialist in Cambodia said a fire safety certificate is both important and beneficial to help to build owners and property management companies to keep themselves in check if their existing Fire Protection Systems are operational.

He said building owners and property/project management of existing buildings and new projects can prepare their design drawings and other required documents to submit to the National Fire Prevention Centre.
To avoid project delays, penalties and problems obtaining fire insurance, Mr Mak said it is best to apply for the Fire Certificate as early as possible.

Mr Mak said that fire safety equipment can be classified into different categories and each must be installed correctly.

“Once the correct system is installed, the system also requires to be well maintained to ensure that it is fully operational under any fire circumstances.”

Many new and existing buildings, according to Mr Mak, may have fire protection installed but some are ill-maintained and not operational, which puts everyone at risk.

Mr Mak recommended designers, building owners, or contractors to look for a qualified company, which can provide design engineering standards that comply with the Cambodia Fire Safety Code and to use equipment certified by National Quality Inspection Centre for Fire Equipment (NICE) Cambodia or international certifications that NICE will recognise.
