Renovation of National Road 5 now 15% complete

The renovation of National Road 5 from Prek Kdam to Thlea Ma Om will be finished by 2022, according to senior officials from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).

According to the Ministry of Information website, the National Road, 5 sections of Prek Kdam to Thlea Ma Om has a total length of 135.24km, with renovations commencing in April 2018 and currently 15% complete. Construction is projected to finish by April 2022.

On 4 March 2020, during the ODA Press Tour, Mr. Don Juan Rogan, Project Officer at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said that “The project will be the ASEAN Highway as part of the Southern Economic Corridor and plays an important role to link regional activities.”

Notably, this renovation of the National Road 5 project is being undertaken with a loan of US$2.46 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Once completed, this section of the ASEAN Highway is expected to increase imports and exports in the country and is a potential route for the Cambodian economy. Local people along the route will have a better life through the growth of investment, investment, and tourism from the improved transport infrastructure.
