Three Japanese firms plan to invest in Phnom Penh waste management system

Three Japanese firms have expressed their interest in investing in a waste management system in Phnom Penh, with the government currently planning to renew the system in the interests of efficiency.

The Japanese firms raised the issue during a meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and the Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Mikami Masahiro.

H.E. Mikami said that the Japanese companies would join in the public bidding for the upcoming waste collection and management.

“Japan has so far been helping Cambodia on water treatment. Now, we also want to help on waste management, which is also very important. Regarding this sector, three Japanese companies are interested in investing in this sector,” said H.E. Mikami.

At this stage, Phnom Penh Municipality and the Ministry of Economy and Finance have placed waste collection in a transitory stage as the current license-holding company was no longer able to handle the volume due to the fact Phnom Penh has grown in size from about 300 square kilometres to 600 square kilometres.

“In the near future, Phnom Penh Municipality and the Ministry of Economy and Finance will run the public bid, so Japanese companies should join the bidding, and help us with the waste collection,” Samdech Hun Sen said.

During this transition period, the government has allowed Cintri, the currently responsible firm for waste cleaning and collection service in Phnom Penh, to perform their task temporarily, but it has no right to collect fees from the public.

Phnom Penh sees approximately an increase of approximately 15%.in solid waste every year. Therefore, the Cambodian government has been working on a better policy to manage waste in an effective way.
