Transport Ministry to Adapt AI technology into Traffic Control System on NR5 after Upgrade

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) is planning to utilise AI technology to manage a traffic system, especially to monitor overweight trucks along NR5 after the upgrade, according to the official meeting between MPWT and the private firm responsible for the NR5 renovation project on 28 May.

The new technology is known as the AI Camera and Weigh-in Motion Sensor Centralised Database Solution System, which is an initiative of the MPWT.

MPWT’s Director of Information Technology and Public Relations Department and chairman of the technical working group Heang Sotheayuth said the system would make it easier for officers to monitor and crack down on any overweight trucks.

At the same time, the system will also make it convenient for drivers, as they do not have to stop over at the actual stations. The AI Camera and Weigh-in-Motion Sensor will automatically report the data by just driving through the spot where the system is installed.

He added that the system will be piloted on the NR5, as well as some other national roads.

Makoto Usami, Project Director of P.E.Jp (Civil Engineering) of NR5, also supported the ministry’s new technology, claiming that it will help extend the road’s quality to last longer.
