Updates on Major Infrastructure Developments in Siem Reap

Although the tourism sector in Siem Reap has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, the government is still active especially in infrastructure development, with the aim to attract more tourists after the crisis is over. Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen once said that although COVID-19 has prevented tourists from travelling to Cambodia and negatively affected the economy, on the positive side, it is a good time for us to upgrade Siem Reap city to prepare the city for even more tourists after the pandemic ends.

Here are the major projects announced for Siem Reap province in 2020:

38-road Renovation Project in Siem Reap

This renovation project has a total length of 108km and is estimated to consume a budget of US$140 million. The construction period is set for 13 months, which means the project will be fully completed by late 2021.
Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen officially broke ground on this project on 30 November. (Read more)

The Siem Reap provincial administration is also preparing to embed optic cables underground. (Read more)

New Siem Reap International Airport

The new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (AIAI) is being built on a 700-hectare land plot with a 1,000-hectare special economic zone under an investment of over US$900 million.
Construction began on 15 March 2020 and is scheduled to be completed in 36 months.
To date, construction of the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is 35% complete and is expected to finish in March 2023 as scheduled. (Read more)

Cambodia’s largest Ferris wheel Angkor Eye

The multi-million-dollar project for Cambodia’s largest Ferris Wheel in Siem Reap province has opened for operation since March this year, marking another significant achievement to boost tourism in the province.

Located in Box Ville, Krous Village, Svay Dangkum Commune, Siem Reap District, or east of the Siem Reap Cultural Village, this giant Ferris wheel is a US$7.2 million investment by Angkor Eye Company Limited.

The Ferris wheel is 85 metres high with 48 baskets and will be able to accommodate up to 192 people and will be the third highest in Asia. (Read more)

NagaCorp’s US$350-million Integrated Resort

Hong Kong-listed casino operator and developer NagaCorp, the parent company of Phnom Penh-based casino NagaWorld, has decided to invest US$350 million building an international standard non-casino resort development project in Siem Reap.
The project named Angkor Lake of Wonder will be built on an area of 75 hectares, situated just south of the outer restricted zone of the world-famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. The company said it has already reached a construction contract deal with two architect firms from the US.
Angkor Lake of Wonder will include hotels, a water theme park, indoor hi-tech theme parks, a canal and water cruise attractions, meetings, conferences and exhibitions, facilities (MICE), cultural attractions, food streets and pubs. The new development will be completed by 2025.​ (Read more)

City Rearrangement and Enhancement

Prime Minister Hun Sen has reallocated US$5-million in leftover budget from Sihanoukville to renovate 9km the Siem Reap River sidewalk. (Read more)

Meanwhile, the renovation of the front area of the Angkor Wat, including building a new walkway, rearranging gardens, and reorganising the street vendors and parking lots, is almost 100% complete. (Read more)

New Siem Reap City Development in Sotr Nikum

The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled plans to establish a new Siem Reap city (Grand Siem Reap), located near the under-construction new Siem Reap Airport in Sotr Nikum district. The new city project is part of a master plan for tourism development in the province. (Read more)

US$19-million Siem Reap Referral Hospital Building

A new Japanese-funded US$19 million building at the Siem Reap Referral Hospital is scheduled to begin construction next year and will take 22 months to complete. (Read more)
