Vietnam Mulls Upgrading Highway 62 Connecting Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia Border Prey Vor

A proposal to upgrade Vietnam’s National Highway 62 connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the Cambodia border Prey Vor in Svay Reing province has been submitted to the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport, reported VN Express on 15 May.

According to the proposal, the renovation project would cost an estimated US$97.9 million but will help shorten the journey from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta and the Cambodian border.

Starting in Long An Province, National Highway 62 runs 76 kilometres through the province before reaching the Vietnam – Cambodia border at Prey Vor.

The roue also connects with highways No.1, N2 and HCMC-Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway. All three are major routes running from HCMC and other southeastern localities to and through the Mekong Delta.

The proposal was raised due to the fact that the current National Highway 62 has been seriously damaged with significant cracks on the surface. Besides, the route is too narrow given the increasing traffic volume.

Thus, the renovation will include fixing the damage and also expanding the road width by two metes to 11 metres.

If approved, the renovation work will begin next year and be set for completion in 2022 with investment funds raised from issuing government bonds.
