Work on Kingdom’s first expressway to start in late March

Work on the US$2 billion Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway project will start on 22 March 2019, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).

Built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), the expressway will be 190 km long and is 24.5 metres wide with the new route being 50 kilometres shorter than the current 240 km highway.

The new expressway will have four lanes with a fence and garden to separate and protect drivers together with three rest areas and other facilities.

The agreement on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway project was signed about a year ago between MPWT and CRBC, and is expected to take four years to complete.

This project will connect Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, to the city of Sihanoukville and the government of Cambodia hopes that the province of Preah Sihanouk will eventually develop into a ‘multi-purpose Special Economic Zone’.
