World’s First Self-Driving High-Speed Train Near Completion

Construction of the world’s first self-driving high-speed railway in China is reaching completion soon ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, reported South China Morning Post last week.

Known as the Beijing-Zhangjiakou intercity railway, this new bullet train line connects Beijing and Zhangjiakou – the games’ twin host cities.

The route has a length of over 173 kilometres of double-tracked high-speed rail, with a maximum speed of 350km/h between Badaling West block post and Donghuayuan North.

With the principal part of the line opened on 30 December 2019, it will be the world’s first self-driving high-speed railway after completion.

Using this new line, travel time between the two cities has also reportedly been shortened from more than three hours to only 47 minutes.
