World’s Highest Tunnel Completes Construction, Bolstering Connectivity in Tibet

In a remarkable feat of engineering and perseverance, the Gokarla Tunnel, the world’s longest high-altitude road tunnel, has reached its completion after an impressive seven-year construction period. Situated in the awe-inspiring region of Tibet, this significant milestone in infrastructure development is poised to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth.

At staggering altitudes of 4,248 meters and 4,117 meters above sea level, the entrances of the tunnel embody the challenges overcome during its construction. Stretching an impressive length of 12,790 meters on one lane and 12,780 meters on the other, the Gokarla Tunnel has earned its distinction as the world’s longest tunnel situated at such a remarkable altitude.

The Gokarla Tunnel serves as a crucial segment of the Lhasa-Tsethang Highway, seamlessly connecting the Dechen township in Lhasa with the Samye township in Lhokha City. This highway is a vital component of the region’s ambitious plan to establish a one-hour economic circle in its central area.

Project leader Zhou Xiaobing lauded the tunnel’s average altitude of 4,300 meters, emphasizing the exceptional geological complexity faced throughout the construction process. The team encountered formidable obstacles, including the tunnel’s considerable length, ventilation requirements, steep inclines, oxygen scarcity, and harsh sub-zero temperatures. Additionally, managing excessive soil moisture and hazardous gases posed further risks during construction.

Zhou explained that had the project been situated in a non-mountainous terrain, completion would have taken a maximum of four years. However, given the average altitude surpassing 4,000 meters, the complexities of the endeavour escalated exponentially.

To overcome these formidable challenges, the construction team employed state-of-the-art equipment, including three-arm drilling trolleys, wet spraying manipulators, electric loaders, and electric excavators. Such cutting-edge technology played a crucial role in navigating the demanding terrain and adverse weather conditions, ensuring the project’s successful realization.

The completion of the Gokarla Tunnel stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the determination to conquer nature’s obstacles.
