Cambodia Requests Additional US$60m Loan from Japan for New Deep-Sea Port Development

Cambodia has requested that Japan consider providing an additional loan of US$60 million for the Sihanoukville port expansion phase 1 due to the yen depreciation that makes the actual budget lower.

The request was made during the meeting between HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport and HE Mori Masafumi, Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, on 13 November.

The additional loan amount will fill in the shortage of a US$203-million total loan. (Read more)

So far, the expansion project now is in the bidding process, with construction expected to begin in early 2023 and scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

After the first phase is completed, Cambodia will expand the depth of the port to 16.5m and to 17m in the 2nd and 3rd phases.
