Phase 1 of SHV Deep-Sea Port Expansion Scheduled for Completion in 2023

The first phase of the Sihanoukville deep-sea port expansion project funded by a US$207 million Japanese loan is scheduled for completion in 2023, according to Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol on 16 February.

HE Chanthol said that the first phase task to expand the seaport to 14.5 metres deep, on which construction will begin soon and will finish by 2023.

“In addition, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is also studying other phases of expansion, such as the 17-metre-deep container port to welcome larger vessels,” he added.

According to the 2020-2030 plan, the Sihanoukville seaport expansion project has a total of five phases. The first phase has completed the design and will begin construction soon. (Read more)

Upon completion in 2023, the port can accommodate large container vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons, or 93% of the total number of vessels in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the meantime, the Cambodian government is also opening for the development partners to study the second and third phases as well by expending the depth to 16 metres and 17.50 metres respectively. According to HE Sun Chanthol, JICA is also studying these phases. (Read more)

For the long term, the government will also expand the port to 18.5 and 19 metres in the fourth and fifth phases.
