The Funan Canal project holds immense promise for Cambodia, promising a multitude of benefits upon its completion. These include reducing transportation distances and costs, establishing commercial zones and logistics centres, developing satellite ports, expanding agricultural activities, supporting urban development, and creating employment opportunities.

The Funan Canal project boasts an impressive infrastructure plan, featuring three navigation lanes, eleven bridges, and 208 kilometres of sidewalks. With construction scheduled to span four years, work is slated to commence by the end of 2024.

Key details about the Funan Canal project unveiled by the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit update on 27 April 2024 shed light on its significance and scope:

1. Connectivity: The canal will link the Mekong River tributary system to the sea, spanning approximately 180 kilometres.
2. Investment: A total budget of US$1.7 billion has been allocated for the project, following a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
3. Route: The canal’s route begins from Prek Takeo, traversing Prek Ta Ek, entering Prek Ta Hing, and terminating at the sea in Kep province.
4. Geographic Coverage: The canal will pass through four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep.
5. Beneficiaries: An estimated population of 1.6 million individuals residing along the canal’s banks stands to benefit from its completion.
6. Specifications: The canal will feature a width of 100 metres above and 80 metres below, with a depth of 5.4 metres (with ships requiring a depth of 4.7 meters).

As the Funan Canal project progresses, it promises to reshape Cambodia’s economic landscape, positioning the nation as a key player in regional trade and development.
