Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen this morning presided over the inauguration ceremony for the official opening of Koh Pen Bridge in Kampong Cham province.

The bridge crosses the Mekong tributary from Sombo Meas district to Kampong Siem district of Kampong Cham province with dimensions of 779 metres long and 9.2 metres wide. The new bridge has the capacity to carry vehicles of up to 30 tons and has an expected lifespan of at least 50 years.

Began in May 2011 , the USD13 million bridge is unique in being fully Cambodian built using a Cambodian technical and engineering team and funded from the budget of the Cambodian government.

“I am very proud to say that Cambodia can now build our own bridge with our own hand. Not only this bridge, I believe that in the future we can build everything by our own if we all reunite and improve ourselves,” said Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.

“This is considered as a successful achievement for us all to let the world know that Cambodia is also helping ourselves, not just waiting for help from other nations,” he added.

The new bridge will help ease transportation for more than 20,000 families living in the area. They now do not have to cross the river by using the ferry or the old wooden bridge anymore.
