Japan provides US$310m for social and economic development in Cambodia

Samdech Techo Hun Sen presided over an Exchange of Notes with Japan’s official development assistance worth US$310 million to Cambodia for economic and social development on the morning of 24 March 2020.

The document was signed by H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and H.E. Mikami Masahiro, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, to implement three grant aid projects and two soft loans projects.

The two soft loan projects are for the improvement of National Road No. 5 from Thlea Ma’am to Battambang and from Sirey Sophorn to Poipet, costing approximately US$161 million and for Prek Kdam to Thlea Ma’am worth approximately US$106.5 million.

The three grand aids are for the Expansion of Water Supply System in Takhmao city, Kandal province (approximately US$31 million), Integrated Mine Clearance and Landmine Victim Assistance (approximately US$9 million), and Economic and Social Development Programme (approximately US$2.7 million).

The grant aid and soft loan assistance offered by the Government of Japan will significantly contribute to promoting the economic and social development of the Kingdom of Cambodia and will further strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Cambodia has received a total of US$550 million in Official Development Assistance (ODA) from Japan over the past three years, most of which has been spent on infrastructure development. (Read more)
