US$55 million from World Bank will be used for water and sanitation projects in Cambodia

The Royal Government of Cambodia has requested a loan of US$55 million from the World Bank to improve water supply and sanitation systems to benefit public health, sanitation in the city and to contribute to ensuring a clean environment, and living conditions of the people.

The project was revealed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in the first meeting of the steering committee for this project which was held at the Ministry office with the participation of the relevant ministries on 25 June 2020.

The project to improve the supply of water and sanitation in Cambodia under the US$55 million financing from the World Bank is divided into two main parts:

The first part focuses on the supply of clean water, and building new water supply systems in Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri province; Stung and Santuk districts in Kampong Thom province; Prasat Bakong and Sotun districts in Siem Reap province; Phnom Proek in Battambang province; and in Samaki Meanchey and Teuk Phos districts in Kampong Chhnang province.

The first part of the project will be implemented by the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The second part of the project is hygiene oriented, with a focus on supporting the development and construction of a drainage network that will be connected to the current sewage system in Siem Reap, so that homes and businesses can connect directly to the whole sewage system in the city.

The second part is to be implemented by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in Siem Reap town, Siem Reap province

Speaking on the subject, HE Kem Borey, Under Secretary of State of Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said: “We need to seek funding from development partners for the construction of sewerage, pumping and treatment system. Also, we need participation from our responsible citizens and their feeling of ownership with legal and regulatory standards, waste management, and collaborating with the private sector and strong operators’ capabilities.”

The project is expected to address issues related to wastewater quality standards from wastewater treatment stations, wastewater service pricing initiatives, incorporating wastewater service fees into the water supply bill, and improving service delivery, and also the management of manure from sewage sludge.
