Major Companies Set to Convert Household Waste into Electricity in Phnom Penh

In a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions, two major companies, SAGE ENGINEERING and VINCI CONSTRUCTION, have unveiled plans to convert household waste into electricity in Phnom Penh. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency while addressing the growing waste management challenges in the capital city.

The announcement followed a working meeting on September 18, 2025, between HE Chea Vuthy, Secretary General of the Cambodia Investment Committee of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and representatives from both companies, including Ms. Claire Hinchliffe from VINCI CONSTRUCTION and Mr. Othmane Dfaili from SAGE ENGINEERING. During this meeting, the representatives presented a comprehensive feasibility study detailing their proposed investment project, which has been in development for approximately a year.

The project aims not only to harness energy from waste but also to contribute to a more sustainable environment. In response to the proposal, HE Chea Vuthy expressed strong support for the initiative and urged the companies to collaborate with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, and the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, to navigate the necessary regulatory processes and secure the required permits.

The Ministry of Environment has been proactively encouraging the establishment of more waste recycling facilities throughout Cambodia. With the country generating over 4 million tons of waste annually, officials recognize that enhancing recycling capabilities is crucial for minimizing environmental impact and conserving essential resources for future generations.
