US$96 Million Phnom Penh-Poipet Rail Line Complete

Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol this morning presided over on the soft launching ceremony of the rail line from Pursat to Phnom Penh, which concludes the final phase of the rehabilitation project of the entire 386 kilometre-long northwest railway line.

The line from Pursat to Phnom Penh is 166km long and comprises of two sections including Pursat-Bat Doeng (134 km) and Bat Doeng-Phnom Penh (32 km). The new line is capable of holding carriages of up to 15 tons.

The Pursat-Phnom Penh section is the fourth and final milestone for the ministry after the 48-kilometre line from Poipet to Serey Sophorn, the 65-kilometre line between Serey Sophorn and Battambang, as well as the 107-kilometre Battambang-Pursat line, which were launched on 4 April, 29 April, and 29 May respectively. According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, the restoration of the whole Poipet-Phnom Penh rail line has cost a total of US$96.6 million, of which about US$13 million was from the ADB and another US$83.6 million was sourced from the Cambodian government’s budget.

After this completion, Cambodia now has a 386-kilometre Poipet-Phnom Phnom Penh rail line, with passengers able to connect on to Bangkok by switching to Thailand’s network at the Khmer-Thai border town of Poipet.

“Connecting Phnom Penh to the Thai border is considered one of the key parts of Cambodia’s logistic master plan and is also is a part of the eastern corridor of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link, that aims to improve the connectivity among ASEAN members,” said H.E. Sun Chanthol.
