Japan Invests Over USD 40 Million in Cambodia, Enhancing Economic Partnerships in 2024

Japan has invested over USD 40 million in Cambodia during the first ten months of 2024, reaffirming its position as the seventh-largest investor in the country. This development was highlighted in a report by the Council for the Development of Cambodia, released on 19 November 2024.

To further strengthen bilateral economic ties, the Cambodian Okhna Association and the Japan-Cambodia Association organized the 2024 Business Match Meeting, bringing together investors from both nations to explore business opportunities. In addition, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in Cambodia and Thailand hosted a series of seminars focusing on attracting Japanese companies to invest in Cambodia through the Thailand +1 strategy, which promotes regional diversification.

HE Sun Chanthol, First Deputy PM and Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia commended the Japan-Cambodia Association for establishing an office in Phnom Penh in April 2024, calling it a pivotal step towards enhancing collaboration and promoting Japanese investments.

He also announced the upcoming launch of the Cambodia Investment Project Management System (CDCIPM), a digital platform enabling investors to submit Qualified Investment Plan (QIP) applications online at any time, streamlining the registration process and ensuring connectivity with relevant ministries.

As of October 2024, Cambodia has approved 346 investment projects totaling USD 5.5 billion, a 38% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
