Temporary housing on construction sites below standards required by law, says report

Temporary housing on construction sites in three provinces have failed to meet the minimum sanitary standards set by the government, according to a report by the Building and Wood Workers Trade Union Federation of Cambodia (BWTUC).

The finding was presented in front of government official, representatives of construction companies, union members, and construction workers on 08 August at the Tonle Bassac II Restaurant.

The report, entitled ‘Assessment of WASH in the Temporary Housing on Construction Sites’, found that the condition of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) on construction sites do not meet the minimum standards of hygiene or the needs of the population of workers and their relatives living on the site.

Conducted on 17 construction sites across Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap, the report noted that none of the temporary housing of the workers provided decent standards.

“WASH conditions are poor and do not meet the standards or requirements set out by Cambodian laws and prakas,” the report noted, “sanitation facilities resultingly are insufficient, without locks, and with holes in the walls”.
According to the figures from the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), construction investment value increased more than 57% in H1 2019, reaching more than US$3 billion.

More than 69,000 jobs existed daily in the construction sector in the first six months of 2019 while in the same period last year more than 14,000 jobs existed on a daily basis in the sector.
