Governor Pledges to Solve Flooding Issue in Sihanoukville

Following widespread video and photos posted on Facebook on the flooding issue in Sihanoukville, Provincial Governor H.E Kuoch Chamroeun told residents on 05 August to stop blocking natural waterways to avoid more floods.

Heavy flooding on from 10 pm on 03 August until 7 am on 04 August 2019, caused difficulties and damage to many properties and made transport by motorcycle difficult.

In response to the issue, H.E Kuoch Chamroeun told Construction and Property Magazine on 05 August that the municipality is currently solving the problem and has asked the people to stop blocking the waterways so water can flow smoothly.

Currently, the drainage system in some areas in Sihanoukville relies on natural waterways which help release water from the city into the ocean.

“Don’t let the people block [build the house over] the waterways anymore, they just take the waterways that’s why there is no way for water to flow. From LV [area] downward, [we] if we look at the waterways, there are many filled up. The waterways that they [municipality] keep are more than 10 metres, but some places are just over 2 metres now, so the water cannot flow on time,” he said.

In addition to requesting people to stop blocking the waterways, H.E Kuoch Chamroeun also said that the municipality will dredge the waterways in the future.

“It has to be dredged in the future; if it is not dredged, our city will have floods, but how to dredge as in some places there are houses so we need to think a little better,” he said.

“If we only dredge, and the others [people] are in pain, it is not good too, because they already built houses on the waterways. So, there is a need to consider, and coordinate accordingly,” he added.
