The Cambodian Government spent over USD 108m on the National Social Assistance Program by April 2025

In a significant step towards enhancing social welfare, the Cambodian government has spent over USD 108 million to support vulnerable populations across the nation. This was announced by HE Chea Somethy, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans, and Youth Rehabilitation, during a public forum held on 19 May 2025, at the National Assembly.

As of 26 April 2025, the government has invested a total of over USD 108.22 million in the National Social Assistance Program under the Family Package initiative. This program has been instrumental in providing critical financial assistance to over 715,347 families holding social security cards. Additionally, it offers targeted support to specific groups within these families, including pregnant women, children under the age of two, individuals with disabilities, the elderly aged 60 and above, as well as scholarships for underprivileged students in primary and secondary public education, and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Minister Chea Somethy emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to social protection, noting that the total expenditure has reached USD 432,909,442,000, equating to more than USD 108.22 million.

Furthermore, the minister revealed that the ministry is actively disbursing social security payments to 56,475 former civil servants and 115,296 veterans, with payments being made bi-monthly through Canadia Bank and ACLEDA Bank. This initiative reflects the Royal Government of Cambodia’s continuous effort to enhance the livelihoods of its retired workforce.

In terms of pensions, the government is committed to consistently increasing payments for former civil servants and veterans, with the current minimum pension now set at 845,000 riels, along with an additional 20,000 riels for retirees who left service before 2024.

As Cambodia strides forward in improving its social protection system, the government’s dedication to uplifting the most vulnerable citizens remains a top priority, showcasing a proactive approach to welfare and assistance that is commendable and necessary for the nation’s growth.
