Japanese Family Donates Three Hectares to Create Phnom Penh’s Newest Public Park

In an inspiring gesture of international goodwill and community spirit, a Japanese family has gifted more than three hectares of valuable urban land to the Phnom Penh Capital Administration to establish a vibrant new public park. Situated in Prey Lvea village within the Choam Chao II commune of Por Sen Chey district, the prime parcel of land is currently undergoing comprehensive site preparation to transform into a major green haven for urban residents. On July 13, 2026, Phnom Penh Governor Khoung Sreng personally conducted a field inspection of the property to review spatial plans and fast-track development directives, promising that the capital’s newest public landmark will take tangible shape in the near future.

The generous donation comes from Michiko Kanzaki, the widow of the late Japanese philanthropist Koji Kanzaki, whose enduring affection for the Cambodian people inspired the family to dedicate this valuable space to the public good. Driven by a desire to see urban families enjoy accessible green spaces in the heart of the city, the Kanzaki family entrusted the property to local authorities with the vision of creating an open, welcoming environment where city dwellers can gather, relax, and connect with nature.

Recognizing the immense health and social value of urban green spaces, Governor Khoung Sreng instructed municipal teams to accelerate infrastructure enhancements across the site. Current plans emphasize extensive landscaping, including the planting of native shade trees to create a lush canopy, as well as the construction of essential public amenities designed to promote active lifestyles. Once complete, the multi-purpose park will feature dedicated walking trails, outdoor exercise stations, bicycle paths, public restroom facilities, and improved drainage canals to maintain environmental cleanliness and flood resilience.

Governor Khoung Sreng emphasized that expanding green zones and public recreational facilities remains a cornerstone of municipal policy, aimed directly at boosting the physical health and overall well-being of Phnom Penh residents. Technical teams from the Phnom Penh Capital Administration have already finalized preliminary engineering and design studies. As a tribute to the family’s legacy and generosity, the capital administration plans to host an official inaugural ceremony upon the park’s completion, welcoming Michiko Kanzaki and her children back to Phnom Penh to view the finished public sanctuary firsthand.
