Cambodia received over US$500 million financing aid from Japan in the past three years

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Cambodia has received a total of US$550 million in Official Development Assistance (ODA) from Japan over the past three years, most of which has been spent on infrastructure development.

This statistic was announced during the farewell meeting for the Japanese ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Hidehisa Horinouchi with the Finance Minister H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth‎, on 21 August.

According to the summary report, out of the total ODA, US$150 million was grant aid for the development of roads, bridges, energy, education, and other sectors.

Meanwhile, the other US$400 million are concessional loans which are being used for the renovation of National Road No. 5, the upgrade of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, irrigation system, power grid, as well as many other development projects.

The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is one of the biggest and well-known Japanese ODA grants to Cambodia, for which a budget of US$209 million for the expansion plan was approved earlier this year. (Read More)

After the completion of the project in early 2023, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port will become an intermediate-scale standard port with the capacity to handle more than 1.29 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year. (Read More)

Meanwhile, the expansion of the National Road No. 5 is also another ongoing project of the Japanese government as well. The loans for this project is over US$500 million for the rehabilitation of NR5 from Prek Kdam to Poipet. (Read  More)

According to the same report, as of the first quarter of 2019, Japanese investment in Cambodia has increased to approximately US$500 million, while Cambodia’s exports to Japan as recorded as being US$1.7 billion.
