Government plans to establish new Siem Reap city

At the 3rd meeting of the inter-ministerial committee for the Tourism Master Plan in Siem Reap on 16 September, the government outlined plans to establish a new Siem Reap city that would allow the construction of modern buildings.

According to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Tourism, the new Siem Reap city will be 60km east of Siem Reap where construction of new mega international airport will also be located.

Establishing this new city is part of a master plan introduced to address relevant issues and to attract tourists following a decline in numbers visiting Siem Reap-Angkor destination.

The inter-ministerial committee has also released the Master Plan for Tourism Development in Siem Reap by introducing four strategic plans and identifying four key potential areas set to be ‘attractive tourist destinations’.

The master plan 2019-2020 for the short term includes a strategy to diversify new tourism products, extend the stay of tourists, create competition, establish connectivity, and the establishment of a new identity for Siem Reap.

Under the slogan ‘Turning Challenges Into Opportunities’ the committee has also designated Tonle Sap Lake, Kulen Mountain, Siem Reap city and surrounding areas to be developed into new tourist destinations beyond Angkor.
