France Provides US$100 Million for Clean Water Treatment Plant Construction in Bakeng Phase II

French government through the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) has provided US$101 million in sovereign loan for Bakeng Clean Water Treatment Plant in Phase II which is capacity of producing 195,000 cubic meter per day.

According to a press release issued on December 31 from Ministry of Economy and Finance, agreement of the sovereign loan was signed here on December 24 by H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance and Ms Ophille Bourhis, director of AFD to Cambodia.

Under the agreement, the budget will be used to build water pumping station which is capacity of 195,000 cubic meter per day, to equip main pipelines, distributing pipeline and other materials for equipping pipelines, and inspect the construction process, as well as to support official capacity on procurement and water system installment control.

The Bakeng clean water treatment plant in phase was made after the Bakeng clean water treatment plant in phase is under construction.

With capacity of 195,000 cubic meter per day, the Phase I of the project is budgeted at US$156 million, US$136 million of which is the financing from AFD, the European Investment Bank and the rest sourced from the Cambodian government budget.

According to a recent survey, the demand for clean water in Phnom Penh will reach 900,000 cubic meter per day by 2025 and increase to 1 million cubic meter per day by 2030.

The Phase I of Bakeng clean water treatment plant is the fourth Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority project after the Niroth Water Treatment Plant Phase I went into operation in 2013, Niroth clean water treatment plant Phase II in 2017, and Chamkar Mom clean water treatment plant in 2019.
