Design of new US$1.5 billion Phnom Penh International Airport 60% completed, construction nears

The architectural design of the US$1.5 billion New Phnom Penh International Airport in Kandal province is now 60% completed with construction coming near, according to Cambodia Airport Investment Co.,Ltd.

Speaking to a group of Japanese investors on 9 January at the Canadia Tower, Mr Yee Con Long, a member of the project steering committee of Cambodia Airport Investment Co.,Ltd, said the architectural design progress of the airport is currently 60% complete with three shortlisted tenderers selected out of the total five which are mainly from China enterprises.

Mr Yee Con said in the meeting, “Yesterday [8 January] we just had the final presentation by shortlisted tenderers, so out of five we selected 3, then on 20 January we will issue a letter of awards for the terminal main contractor”.

According to Mr Yee Con, the airport, which stretches over an area of 2,600 hectares, will be divided into three phrases with the first phrase set to be complete in 2022.

“We expect by July that we will issue award, then we will start the construction for the area, so the plan is to target to complete everything by July 2022, and then we have the testing and commissioning before oral operational readiness of the airport transfer,” he said.

He added that, “We will take about 6 months, so the target to go online will January 2023, so this is the fast track project so it will take us about from now until December 2022, so it will be three years, so we need to come out with phrase one of the airport”.

Mr Yee Con said the new airport will have the capacity to accommodate up to 27 million passengers by 2030 and by 2050 it will be able to accommodate up to 30 million passengers in line with the master plan.

The new Phnom Penh International Airport is a joint venture between OCIC and the Cambodian government’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA). (Read more)
