Ministry of Public Works gives Hanshin one month to take action before cancelling the contract

After issuing a warning two weeks ago, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, HE Sun Chanthol, issued a second warning, giving Hanshin Engineering & Construction a month to comply with its pledges to carry out the contract to continue construction of National Road 2 project with proper technical standards and no delay. Otherwise, the ministry will cancel the contract with the Korean company and select a new company to undertake the project instead.

“We will discipline Hanshin … we will ask them to discuss with you. They will have a month to resolve the problem. If they still could not solve it, we will move to cancel the contract and choose a new company.”

This second serious warning was given by H.E Minister on the occasion of monitoring the progress of the construction of National Road 3 from Chom Chao to Kampot this morning.

His Excellency confirmed that on 20 May, a team from the Ministry of Public Works, Bank of Korea, and from the Korean Embassy went to inspect National Road 2 site and found that inactivity, as he had previously claimed. There was no machinery working on the site at all.

He said that after the ministry had issued the letter, the construction company had responded to the ministry that the company would make more efforts to comply with the contract. The company explained that because of the COVID-19 problem, there were not enough machinery to build National Road 2, as they are stuck in Vietnam.

It should be recalled that National Road No.2-22, the project for the redevelopment of National Highway 2 and National Road 22, has a total length of 72 kilometres, with an estimated construction cost of US$56 million. The groundbreaking ceremony was inaugurated on 11 February, 2020, presided over by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Mr. Park Hing Kyung, Ambassador of Korea to Cambodia.
