Indonesia building road for Cambodia in the leader’s name to symbolise lasting friendship

The Republic of Indonesia has proposed to build a road in Cambodia that can be named after the ASEAN nation’s senior leadership to symbolise the historic and long-standing ties between Cambodia and Indonesia.

The proposal was made during a meeting between H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport and H.E. Sudirman Haseng, to Cambodia on 5 June 2020.

The Ambassador proposed the Cambodian Senior Minister to look into the possibility of building a road that can be named after the senior leader of the Republic of Indonesia.

H.E. Pal Chandara, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at Ministry of Transportation told Construction & Property Magazine on 11 June that the road projects are to be named after individuals’ or leaders’ names, with the cost of construction being the responsibility of that person, company or country.

“In general, naming one project after any individual figure, country or company, the cost will be their responsibility, just like the Canadia road which is also Canadia’s expense,” he said.

H.E. Sun Chanthol welcomed and supported the initiative of the Indonesian ambassador which is seen as very important for promoting the economy, tourism, and investment relations between the two countries.

Notably, roads named after various countries or their leaders’ names in Phnom Penh include Russian Federation Blvd., Czech Repulic Blvd., Hanoi Friendship Blvd, Mao Tse Toung Boulevard, Asian Highway 11, Poland Republic Blvd, Charles de Gaulle Blvd, Jawaharlal Nehru Blvd. among others.
