Government Mulls Building Another 150-megawatt Hydropower Dam

The Council of the Ministers on Friday will discuss whether or not to approve a new 150-megawatt hydropower dam project in Thmar Bang district of Koh Kong Province.

According to a statement from the Government’s Spokesman Unit, the 150-megawatt power dam project was proposed for a feasibility study by Chinese firms –Chint Group and Sinomath in September last year.

The Minister of Mines and Energy’s spokesman HE Victor Jona, previously said that the 150-megawatt power dam is located on the upper Tatay River or about 20km upstream of the operational Tatay River Hydropower, which was put into operation in 2015.

Besides discussing the new dam, the meeting on Friday will also discuss on the 500-kilovolt transmission line from Phnom Penh to the Laos border and from Battambang province to the Thai border.

This 500-kilovolt transmission line project will be used to transfer 2,400 megawatts of power which Cambodian government agreed to purchase from Laos.
