MPWT: Phnom Penh-Bavet Railway Remains Prioritised Infrastructure

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has said that the railway construction project connecting Phnom Penh and Bavet city on the Vietnam border remains listed as a prioritised infrastructure construction project.

The remarks were made after Cambodia and Vietnam agreed to build a border crossing railway project to boost trade between the two countries.

Ministry spokesman Vasim Sorya said on 25 February that the governments of Cambodia and Vietnam have agreed on the project, where Cambodia will build the railway from Phnom Penh to Bavet and the Vietnamese side will build the railway from Ho Chi Minh city to the border.

“Cambodia and Vietnam have agreed verbally on the railway construction project, but an official agreement on the project has not been signed yet,” he said.

Many private sector companies have asked the ministry to conduct a feasibility studies on the railway projects between Phnom Penh and Bavet city. According to HE Vasim Sorya, one Chinese firm completed a study in October last year, but the government has yet to take any action.

Nevertheless, the ministry spokesman said the Phnom Penh-Bavet railway construction project is still on the prioritised infrastructure construction project list after the road which he referred to as the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project.
